Bonechillers  by  David Cropper  © 2005  Llewellyn Worldwide  ISBN  0-7387-0758-9  Paperback  256 pages short stories   Ages 10 and up  $8.95 (U.S.)   $11.95 (Canada)

The subtitle of this book is “13 Twisted Tales of Terror.”  Who doesn’t enjoy a nice, terror-filled story once in a while?  Okay, those of you who raised your hands are excused from the rest of this review.  Everyone else, settle down and pay attention.  Before I even got into the stories I noticed the little drawings on the right-hand edge of the odd-numbered pages.  For those old fogies like me, I will simply say that they make a flip book.  For those of you too young to know what that means – it is like a do-it-yourself black-and-white cartoon.  Enjoy it.  You probably won’t see many more of them in your lifetime.

These stories are set in a variety of times and places, and contain an eclectic mix of participants, which makes them all the more appealing.

The stories are short (about 18 pages each, on average), but they are very appealing for all of that.  If you are an individual who enjoys scary stories, this is a collection you will certainly want on your bookshelf.

I would not recommend it to younger readers and, in fact, I feel that 10 and up is a little generous.  I would probably add a couple of years to that and say ages 12 and up.

Ghosts, Chinese monsters in the mountains, and werewolves comprise the first three stories in this collection, which should serve to give you an idea just how eclectic it is.  You will be sure to find something in here which will suit your fancy, if not several.

This is a fun book to read, and would make a good addition to the stack for summer reading.  It should hit the bookstores in August, so keep on the lookout for it.
